Merchant Navy Officers Eligible to use Douneside

Please contact us for details.

Relaxation of Eligibility Rules

Trustees have agreed that previously non-entitled immediate family (parents, adult children and siblings of entitled Officers) may now come to Douneside provided they are sponsored by the entitled Officer.  The sponsor does not need to be present.  Such arrangements are at the Managers' discretion and may not be approved during peak holiday times when the priority will be given to entitled Officers.

A new 'immediate family' rate has been established.  This is approximately 10% more expensive than entitled rates - see tariff for details

Tariff Structure

A new tariff structure, with revised rates across the board, was introduced at the beginning of the 2011 Guest Season - 30 April. Key points are:

  • Simplified structure for adults i.e. entitled or non-entitled.  Thus, there will no longer be a differentiation between serving and retired officers.
  • The Lady MacRobert Room (Room 6) will attract a £5 supplementary charge, per person, per night, over the rates for other premium category rooms.  This charge is waived for serving officers.
  • Children's rates have been staged to better reflect our costs.
    • Under 5s remain free of charge
    • New category 5-11 years (cheaper than current rates)
    • New category 12-21 years (more expensive than current rates)
    • £5 supplement will be charged for 5-11s who take dinner with parents rather than high tea.
  • Self-catering rates have been overhauled.
  • Reduced rates, introduced during the 2010 season, for DB&B and B&B only, are still available, as outlined below under the Flexible Tariff Rates title.

Rates had not been increased for 2 years, but costs have risen, so prices have had to be raised in line with RPI and reflecting the increase in VAT to 20%.

Please see tariff for details.

10% Discount Incentive Scheme

Introduce new entitled guests to Douneside and you'll be eligible for a 10% discount during your next visit.  Your friends will also receive a 10% discount for their first visit.  On booking, each party will be issued with a Douneside House 10% Discount Certificate with their name on it (pdf document).

This scheme will run for an introductory period of 3 years, from 30 April 2011.  Terms and conditions apply - please see tariff.

Flexible Tariff Rates

Although full board is by far the best value for money, we are able to offer other options.  For those who do not wish to take all meals at Douneside, we now offer Dinner Bed & Breakfast only and Bed & Breakfast only options.  These rates are not available for children, as their rates are already heavily subsidised. It is emphasised that the DB&B and B&B only rates meant just that i.e. they do not include morning coffee, afternoon tea or lunch - these can still be ordered as extras, at 'casula meal' rates.  Please see tariff for details.

25% Operational Tour Discount

25% discounts for those serving in, or returning from, Afghanistan.
We offer 25% discount to British officers serving or returning from operations, either whilst on R&R, or within 12 months of return.

Three caveats apply:

  • Only one discounted stay per tour.
  • The 25% discount cannot be combined with any other promotion running at the time.
  • Minimum of 30 days in theatre applies.

New Digital TVs

There are now digital TVs with built-in DVD players in all apartments and cottages.

Weddings at Douneside

We are delighted to announce that we are able to offer Douneside as a location for small weddings (up to 60 - more if willing to compromise on dining location).  Given sufficient notice, weddings may be held during the guest season (May through to mid-October), or out of season, through late autumn, winter and early spring.  Please telephone or e-mail to find out more.

Self-Catering

Two cottages may be available for self-catering for a minimum stay of 3 days.

These are Pine and Gatehouse cottages.  Please see tariff for details.  These may also be available out of season for winter holidays - salmon fishing, skiing, mountaineering, walking etc.  The cottages will not be availalble for self-catering during peak holiday periods.

Cancellation Fee

We no longer take a deposit on booking.  In lieu of deposits, a 20% cancellation fee may be charged if a booking is cancelled within one month of the due arrival date.  This fee will be waived if the room is re-let.  Please see tariff for details.

Douneside's Wi-Fi link
There are several wi-fi access points at Douneside which means that free internet access is available in all areas of the main house.

Also, we provide a wi-fi linked laptop and printer for guests' use (in the conservatory).
